Agroforestry Practices Supported

The Savanna Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that catalyzes the development and adoption of resilient, scalable agroforestry. The organization grew out of a grassroots gathering of Midwestern farmers, graduate students, and community members interested in ecological agriculture. Inspired by the oak savanna native to the region, we envision a multifunctional agriculture in the Midwest US based on agroforestry systems of integrated trees, crops, and livestock that fosters ecological resilience, climate stability, economic prosperity, and vibrant communities.

Inspired by the oak savanna native to the region, we envision a multifunctional agriculture in the Midwest US based on agroforestry systems of integrated trees, crops, and livestock that fosters ecological resilience, climate stability, economic prosperity, and vibrant communities. Savanna Institute lays the groundwork for widespread agroforestry through education, demonstration, research, technical assistance, and market-building. Our work is focused on the Midwest US where we work closely with farmers, landholders, scientists, industry builders, and community partners.

The Savanna Institute offers agroforestry technical assistance to farmers in 6 states, trains natural resource and ag professionals nationally to offer technical assistance, demonstrates agroforestry on 8 farms managed by the nonprofit, organizes a Midwest Network for agroforestry farmers to communicate, breeds better varieties of tree crops, and researches the agroecosystem benefits of perennial crops. To get involved, join us at an upcoming field day or at Savanna Institute's signature event of the year, the Perennial Farm Gathering.
