Agroforestry Practices

Introduction

Silverwood’s tasting orchard was planted for community events with a large variety of fruits that Dane County visitors can’t typically find in a grocery store. The windbreak design slows wind to prevent soil erosion, decreases snow drift, and protects crops from wind stress — plus, the windbreak’s flowering American plums support pollinators. In the alley cropping demonstration, chestnut and black walnut trees are interplanted with annual crops.
