Agroforestry Practices Supported

The University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry is recognized worldwide as a leader in agroforestry research. Since 1998, our scientists have investigated the impacts of integrating trees with crops and/or livestock on family farm economics, state and national-level conservation goals, and human health. Paired with curation and breeding activities for black walnut, chestnut, pecan, hazelnut, and elderberry spanning nearly three decades, our field research equips farmers with high performing cultivars that have the potential to boost farm gate revenue.

The Center educates the next generation of agroforestry leaders through the nation’s first and only comprehensive agroforestry graduate degree. Outreach programming brings our latest research findings down to earth, with annual trainings, field workshops, and a robust network of demonstration farms in Missouri.

Our intertwined mission of research, education, and outreach works jointly to stand up profitable and resilient new tree crop industries and agroforestry innovations for family farms across the Midwest.

More Information

The Center for Agroforestry's activities span eight priority research areas: tree crop breeding and genetics; horticulture best management practices for agroforestry crops, mixed species production systems design and performance, silvopasture innovation, human health and natural products, soil health and bioremediation, economic modeling and enterprise development, agroforestry adoption infrastructure, and agroforestry professional pathways.

Across all priority areas, our outreach efforts bring insights and innovations from our living labs to working farmers and professionals in agroforestry and related fields through research translation, professional training, partner collaboration, and demonstration. We communicate the science behind agroforestry through a variety of digital platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and our monthly email newsletter. We also synthesize the latest research into print materials, including our Agroforestry Training Manual and 12+ technical guides spanning our focal crops.

Our scientists step up to the plate during our annual events to convey their latest findings to broader audiences through field tours, online webinars, and hands-on workshops. These events span a network of regional demonstration sites, including Mizzou research farms, conservation centers, and private working farms, to showcase agroforestry systems in practice and provide interactive spaces for Q&A, networking, and professional development. Our event mainstays are The Agroforestry Symposium (January), The Agroforestry Academy (April-June), and the Missouri Chestnut Roast Festival (October), with seasonal field workshops and other opportunities offered in-between.
