LiKEN's program works on incorporating non-timber forest products into forest management and conservation projects in central Appalachia, and developing sustainable forest-based livelihoods. We focus on products and practices with cultural significance and stewardship traditions in the region, especially managing and growing understory plants and fungi, multifunctional riparian buffers, and tree syrups. We hold workshops and trainings, do site assessment and production planning, negotiate land access, and connect producers to other supportive organizations, cost-share programs, and markets.
