Introduction
Our farm is situated in the Swannanoa mountains. We have many special woodland plants growing wild, and we have introduced many others over the years. In 2024, after receiving a Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant, I began a small plant nursery. I specialize in native perennials including many woodland medicinal plants. In addition to the nursery, I harvest small batch medicinal herbs for local herbalists and herbal medicine companies, and I make herbal salves from the many herbs I grow on the farm.
Main Agroforestry Species
Solomon's Seal, Goldenseal, Echinacea, Bloodroot, American Ginseng, Black Cohosh, Ramps, Yarrow, Sochan, Mountain Mint, Wild Ginger, Green and Golds, etc..

Agroforestry System Design
Our forest is around 100 years old. We have a lot of Tulip Poplar, Chestnut Oak, Hickory, Spicebush, Wild Hydrangea, and perennials like Solomon's Seal, Black Cohosh, Blue Cohosh, Bloodroot, Trillium and Ginseng. The Ginseng has been mostly poached out, so we're repopulating the forest with it slowly. We have a lot of invasive species, and removing those is a huge part of our stewardship. We've seen the forest health improve every year since we began this work, and it is the most fulfilling work I've ever done.
Personal or Collective Experiences
The benefits are health of the forest, our physical health, mental health, and the community I've found in the forest farming world.
The challenges have been mostly weather related (Hurricane Helene took out a lot of the work we'd done over the past few years)
