Agroforestry Practices

Introduction

We have several experimental silvopasture plantings ranging in age from 11 years to 2 years.
Our oldest silvopasture is an orchard planting that we graze sheep through 2-3 times/year.
The next oldest is based on Trees for Graziers' favorite species and uses their "overpass system" with Plantra tree tubes to protect the trees from grazing animals.
Our two newest plantings are a fodder block of willow, poplar and river locust that we mow down once a year and give the animals access to once a year. And a planting of elderberry and hybrid hazelnut in the middle of a pasture, for some animal shade and eventual new products for the farm.
