Agroforestry Practices

Introduction

I am a small farm and vendor in Atlanta's farmers markets on Saturdays and Sundays. I sell seedlings, herbs and greens from March to November, as well as to food trucks, catering companies. I am also a WWOOF host and have about 20 volunteers each year for the last three years. Volunteers typically stay 2-3 days and help me with invasive species removal, seeding, planting, transplanting, infrastructure projects like terrace building and high tunnel construction. I also have several chickens in my forested area, they benefit from the shade in the hot humid summers and windbreaks in winter.

Agroforestry System Design

In the sunniest part of my property (still part shade, less than 5 hours of sunlight per summer day), I have build terracing and grow most of my family/home's vegetables, herbs and fruits. On flatter area, I had a small hoop house (10 by 20ft) built where I start seeds and sell these starter/seedling plants at farmers markets, online and by word of mouth.

I am looking to scale up financially, and utilize more native plants in "blank" spaces around the lucrative areas. And I'm always looking for more market opportunities with specific to my site's ability!

I have some flooding issues and certainly would like to expand with more financial assistance. I have won business coaching grants from Georgia Organics but no financial income outside of some disaster recovery NRCS money in 2024.

Personal or Collective Experiences

I have taken two permaculture projects and worked abroad in Central America and use many conservation tactics I've learned, including terracing and swales/berms, all the design principles I can use!
