Introduction
The Restoration Agriculture Farm at Clemson University is a living demonstration of regenerative, perennial-based agriculture that integrates research, teaching, and Extension. Located at the Calhoun Fields Laboratory in the Seneca Bottoms, the farm showcases an innovative alley cropping system designed to produce nutrient-dense foods while restoring ecological function and increasing resilience to changing climate conditions. By combining annual crops with diverse plantings of fruit, nut, and native tree and shrub species, the farm mimics the structure and function of healthy regional ecosystems.
The farm serves as a hands-on learning environment where students, researchers, and community members explore sustainable farming practices, ecological restoration, and resilient agricultural systems. Through ongoing research, demonstration projects, and collaborative Extension efforts, the Restoration Agriculture Farm advances practical solutions that support productive agriculture, environmental stewardship, and the future of resilient food systems.

Diverse planting including 62 different species and hybrids form 25 genera, focusing on native fruit and nut trees and shrubs, with key plants including; Butternut, Heartnut, Black Walnut, Oak, Pecan, Hickory, Hicans, Italian Pines, Persimmon, Pawpaw, Honey Locust, Redbud, Sassafras, Black Gum, Mulberry, Hazelnuts, Dogwoods, Yaupon Hollies, Aronia, Blueberry, and Serviceberry.

Agroforestry System Design
The Restoration Agriculture Farm is intentionally designed to demonstrate how thoughtful landscape engineering can improve agricultural productivity while restoring ecological function. The farm's signature feature is a series of concentric berms and swales that manage water naturally across the landscape. During heavy rainfall, the berms slow and redirect water, while the swales capture runoff, reduce erosion, and promote infiltration. This design helps protect crops from flooding and builds resilience to increasingly frequent and intense rain events.
The swales are planted with diverse native wildflowers and flowering perennials that provide season-long habitat and forage for pollinators and other beneficial insects. In addition to enhancing biodiversity, the vegetation further slows water movement, filters sediment, and contributes to healthier soils and improved water quality.
Between the perennial tree rows are 55-foot-wide alleys that provide space for annual agronomic crop production and applied research. These alleys support studies on grain production, cover cropping, soil health, and integrated cropping systems while maintaining compatibility with modern agricultural equipment. Together, the perennial plantings, pollinator habitat, and research alleys demonstrate how productive farming and ecological restoration can work together to create resilient agricultural landscapes.
