Agroforestry System Design

The Bronx River Foodway is a pilot project at Concrete Plant Park developed by NYC Parks Department in 2017 to examine how a sustainable food landscape can be integrated into a public park. The goal is to jump-start the imagination and think about new ways to use land within the city. The site is considered a multifunctional piece of green infrastructure boasting a myriad of ecosystem benefits including native wildlife habitat and native tree canopy, helping to mitigate impacts from climate change including stormwater capturing and heat island mitigation.

The Foodway invites community members to access to a variety of edible plants including medicinal plants like echinacea, nut trees like the chestnut, an assortment of native berries, as well as a section dedicated to kitchen herbs and recognizable veggies. The site is seeks to make the unfamiliar plants familiar, and the familiar plants accessible for community to forage and use. Small signs guide visitors through the site and public events invite community members in to learn and engage in the site.

Personal or Collective Experiences

The Bronx River Foodway has proven to offer critical habitat for migratory wildlife traveling along the Bronx River as well as resources for climate resiliency. Wildlife like birds and pollinators can find food and refuge at this site while the trees and plants help to improve soils structures and ability to store water onsite. Furthermore the edible canopy and medicinal herbaceous plants keep the area cooler mitigating climate change impacts. Flooding can be a problem along the river and during extreme weather events. By growing a dynamic agroforestry site, we are able to provide ecological benefits while establishing a long term resiliency strategy for future flood events.
